Savannah Chrisley was resilient in her quest to get her parents, Todd and Julie Chrisley, out of prison and back to everyday life. Her mission paid off when she helped secure a presidential pardon from President Donald Trump on May 27, 2025. Todd and Julie were serving time for bank fraud and tax evasion, but the former reality TV couple are home again and back in the limelight.

Julie had served time at the Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky, and Todd was at the Federal Prison Camp in Pensacola, Florida. Since their return from prison, the pair have been open about what life behind bars is really like and how it has left a lasting impact. However, they also made a few surprising claims.

Fans have been interested in finding out more about Todd and Julie Chrisley’s experiences, and, in an episode of their podcast, Chrisley Confessions 2.0, they gave an insight into their survival mode and mindset while in prison.

“I’ve actually talked to a few of the women that I was in prison with that [that are] already home,” Julie said. “And we all have this general consensus that — it’s kind of weird to even say it…” Todd interrupted her thoughts to say, “It’s not weird.”

He continued, “Life is rougher than prison life. I mean, that’s a sad thing to say because it is so horrific, the conditions that you’re there for, but that’s from a physical standpoint, but from an emotional and psychological standpoint, it is harder dealing with day to day.”

Julie also noted how being in prison is incredibly isolating because inmates are given no control. “There’s very little you can do because you’re in prison… And people told me this when I first got there, you can’t live out there and in here at the same time because it’ll literally run you crazy,” she said. “And the longer you’re there, the more removed you become to the world.”

Julie was away from her four children, and she discussed the experience on the podcast. She also revealed how she needed to adopt a different mindset to help her cope while serving time. “The longer that people are away from their kids, as crazy as it sounds — because it’s a double edged sword — the easier it becomes because you get into your own routine,” she told Todd.

She continued, “It doesn’t mean you don’t miss them, you don’t love ’em, all that but just from me being in prison, I had to just watch out for me,” she recalled. “I had to take care of me. I had to make sure that I was good, as good as I could be. Physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and that’s all I could really do.”

She spoke about how inmates are forced to get into this headspace as a way to cope with their situation.

Lol,” another fan shared. “I would just love to hear your whole story.”
