Base officials said the lockdown happened at 11:04 a.m. Wednesday.

FORT STEWART, Ga. — The U.S. Army base Fort Stewart in Georgia is currently on lockdown due to an active shooter on base, officials confirmed in a Facebook post Wednesday.

11:04 a.m. | Lockdown put into effect on Fort Stewart in response to an active shooter situation.

11:39 a.m. | Liberty County Schools under soft lockdown in response to active shooter incident on Fort Stewart. Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary and Snelson Golden Middle School are under lockdown.

11:40 a.m. | All gates on Fort Stewart closed.

11:46 a.m. | Officials confirm active shooter incident, say casualties have been reported.

11:58 a.m. | FBI Atlanta’s Savannah office is aware of the active shooter incident and is coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division.

12:10 p.m. | Georgia Governor Brian Kemp calls incident a ‘tragedy’, issuing the following statement:

“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same.”

All gates on Fort Stewart are closed to outside traffic.

Fort Stewart officials said the active shooter situation is happening on the base’s 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area, including Write and Evans Army Airfield. 

“Lockdown your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors,” base officials said in a Facebook post. “Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership.”

The installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m. and law enforcement is on the scene at the time.

Base officials said casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing.
