ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A Central Florida family is heartbroken and calling for justice after a man in a wheelchair was hit and killed in a hit-and-run crash Sunday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the crash happened just before 9 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 436 and State Road 50. The victim, 48-year-old Pedro Castro, was crossing the roadway in his wheelchair when he was struck by what investigators describe as a dark-colored sedan.

The driver did not stop, troopers said.

Castro’s daughter, Naomi Castro, told News 6 her family is devastated by the sudden loss.

“What went through your mind when you heard somebody hit your father with their vehicle and kept going? I was like, ‘What? Are you kidding me?’” she said.

Naomi says her father was a beloved family man, known for his humor and cooking.

“How can anyone, any human being, do that to another human being? It’s so cruel,” she said. “You would think you had some kind of heart to stop and see if he’s okay. But the fact that they just kept going, it frustrates me.”

The Florida Highway Patrol released surveillance footage of the crash in hopes of generating leads and identifying the driver.

“Unfortunately I saw it today,” Naomi said about the surveillance video. “I didn’t even know it was out until family and coworkers came to me and they brought it to my attention,” she said.

The family is urging anyone with information about the driver or the vehicle involved to come forward.

“Please, for the love of God, if there’s any inch of humanity in you, please come out,” Naomi said. “If you know something, if you’ve seen it, if you know anything, please come out and say it.”

A fundraising page for the family has been created, which can be found here.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous.
