FORT STEWART, Ga. () — The infantryman who allegedly shot and killed a fellow solider on Fort Stewart in 2022 made his first court appearance Wednesday.

Suspected shooter Spc. Shay Wilson was federally indicted for murder on July 9, 2025, a 3rd Infantry Division Public Affairs spokesperson said.

He is charged in connection to the 2022 death of Sgt. Nathan M. Hillman.

Hillman was from Plum, Pennsylvania, and was assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division in July 2021.

He was a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear specialist. Hillman had initially joined the Army in February 2015, deploying to Afghanistan once and earning the Air Assault Badge.

Fort Stewart officials said Wilson allegedly shot Hillman one time with a privately owned weapon during an incident at the 2nd ABCT complex. Wilson was quickly subdued by other soldiers in the area.

On Aug. 6, the same day as Wilson’s first court appearance, a soldier on Fort Stewart allegedly opened fire and injured five other soldiers on base. Fellow soldiers also subdued the suspected shooter in this incident, officials said.

Wilson was apprehended by Fort Stewart law enforcement at the scene and transferred to the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division’s custody. The U.S. Army has since dismissed charges under the Uniformed Code of Military Justice in favor of federal prosecution, the spokesperson said.

Wilson is still in federal custody awaiting disposition and is currently undergoing administrative separation from the Army, the 3rd Infantry Division Public Affairs spokesperson said.
