Footage of triple murderer Erin Patterson’s interview with police days after the fatal mushroom lunch has been released by the Victorian Supreme Court.

The mother-of-two was taken to Wonthaggi police station on August 5, 2023 after police searched her Leongatha home and seized evidence.

The interview with Detective Leading Senior Constable Steven Eppingstall occurred after Gail Patterson and Heather Wilkinson had died in hospital, and just before Don Patterson’s death.

Patterson’s legal team tried to stop the footage being released to the public, but today Justice Christopher Beale sided with the media.

In the snippets of the interview that have been released to the public, Eppingstall explains that police are trying to understand why Patterson’s four lunch guests fell so ill but she did not, and asks if she understands that.

She replies: “Yeah, I do, but I’m sure you understand, too, that I’ve never been in a situation like this before. And I’ve been very, very helpful with the health department through the week because I wanted to help that side of things as much as possible because I do want to know what happened. So I’ve given them as much information as they’ve asked for and offered up all the food and all the information about where the food came from.”

The detective goes on to ask Patterson why she had her estranged husband Simon’s parents and uncle and aunt over for lunch.

She gives a lengthy response.

“Because I’ve got no other family, so they’re the only support I’ve got left and they’ve always been really good to me,” she said.

“And I want to maintain those relationships with him in spite of what’s happened to Simon.

“I love them a lot. They’ve always been really good to me, and they always said to me that they would support me, with love and emotional support, even though Simon and I were separated, and I really appreciated that.

“‘Cause I, my parents are both gone.

“My grandparents are all gone, they’re the only family that I’ve got.

“And they’re not only grandparents that my children have, and I want them to stay in my kids’ life, and that’s really important to me and, I think Simon hated that I still had a relationship with his parents, but I, I loved them.”

In the interview, Patterson also says she “never” foraged for mushrooms.

When she was on the stand during her trial, she then admitted that she had foraged for them previously.

The interview has been released on the same day as

, including allegations Erin poisoned Simon Patterson with foods including toxic penne pasta and cookies laced with rat poison and antifreeze.
