NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — On Tuesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation updated its national crime database and revealed the latest five-year trend for crime in Tennessee.

Every year, the FBI publishes data from law enforcement agencies across the U.S. as part of the national Incident-Based Reporting System. The latest data, which tracks crime through December 2024, found that for all violent crimes reported in the system — homicide, rape, aggravated assaults and robberies — saw declines over the past five years in the Volunteer State.

The number of robberies saw the largest decrease, with about 38.5% fewer robberies reported in December 2024 than December 2019. Homicides saw the second-largest decrease at just over 30% between December 2024 and December 2019. Reported rapes also declined by about 18%. Of all violent crime tracked by the FBI in Tennessee, aggravated assaults saw the smallest decrease at just around 1%.

Tennessee’s overall decreases in reported violent crime follow a nationwide trend, with the FBI finding that national crime decreased by 4.5% in 2024 compared to 2023 estimates.

The FBI also included data about property crimes — arson, burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft. In every category except for one, Tennessee also saw declines. There was about a 42% decrease in the number of burglaries; larceny-theft decreased by about a quarter as well. Arsons decreased by about 7.5%.

However, when it came to motor vehicle thefts, Tennessee saw about a 3.9% increase.
