Why Trey Is The Best Cast Member On Hitmakers

There’s an all-new reality TV show competition on Netflix that you won’t want to miss. Their latest series, Hitmakers, brings 12 of the most accomplished songwriters together to see if they can craft future hits for some of the world’s biggest musicians.

During the six episodes of the series, drama often comes to a head as creative egos clash, with each person believing their own voice to be the strongest. There is one cast member, however, who struggles with his confidence and perceived lack of success, and he’s quickly proving to be a fan favorite.

Trey Campbell Was Open About His Personal Struggles

The one cast member who appears the most humble and still hungry to make his mark on the music industry is Trey Campbell. Unlike some of the other cast members, who are already quite wealthy from penning hits in the past, Trey explains to the cameras that he still struggles financially, and that he was even driving for Uber prior to filming the show.

Trey brings a grounded tone to the show, also opening up about his recent breakup, the sadness from which he’s able to channel into his songwriting and lyrics. In a post on his personal Instagram page, Trey posted photos of himself with the rest of the Hitmakers cast along with a heartfelt note about how meaningful the opportunity was for him:

if you know me, you know 2024 was an incredibly hard year for me. one of the most difficult i’ve experienced in my life. i felt like the very foundation of me was crumbling. i tried everything to keep it together…on and off camera. being a part of Hitmakers really helped me to release that last little bit of the old me that i needed to let go. this experience has changed me forever…for the good. i learned there’s real strength in letting go and letting God. i learned that, if i allowed space for it, friends that feel like family truly show up.

“The most important lesson i learned is that you can rebuild stronger and better than you ever thought you could be,” Trey went on. “There’s no amount of thank yous that will ever capture how much i appreciate this experience, my friends/cast, the production teams/crew, and all of you viewing. here’s to inspiring more hardworking creatives out there and, God-willing, season 2. watch every episode if you love me frfr.”

Fans Are Loving Trey’s Authenticity

While there has yet to be a Season 2 officially announced like Trey is hoping for, there’s no doubt that his fan base has already considerably expanded since appearing in Season 1. In the comments of Trey’s Instagram posts, fans cheered him on, many of them noting how much they appreciated his authenticity and humility on the show.

One follower noted how much they related to Trey when they watched the season:

Your vulnerability made you so relatable!! Love to see it bring you full circle to where you are now amigo!! As I told you for your birthday, God makes no mistakes. You are destined for greatness!!!

“Forever inspired by you, Trey. So happy for you. Can’t wait to binge every episode and cheer for you! I can relate, as 2024 was one of the hardest years of my life as well. Us artists feel things incredibly deeply, and from one artist to another, I’m sending you much love, hugs, and congratulations!” wrote another.

It seems that things may be looking up for Trey in the near future. At the end of the season, in Episode 6, he reveals that he’s been in talks with John Legend about one of the songs he helped work on, an upbeat tune called “Cherry.” In success, it’s possible John will record it for his upcoming album.

Hitmakers is a reality TV series on Netflix that dives deep into the high-stakes world of songwriting and music production. Set in a competitive format, the show brings together a diverse group of up-and-coming songwriters from around the globe, all vying for the chance to break into the music industry. Each episode follows contestants as they craft and pitch their original songs to a panel of established music producers, recording artists, and A&R executives. These judges bring a wealth of industry experience and aren’t afraid to offer blunt, constructive feedback. The series doesn’t just focus on the performances—it also showcases the behind-the-scenes moments of creative struggle, mentorship, and collaboration. By offering a real-world look at what it takes to create a hit song from scratch, Hitmakers sets itself apart from more traditional talent competitions.

As the competition advances, so do the emotional and professional stakes. Contestants are not only judged on vocal performance or charisma but on their ability to write commercially viable, emotionally resonant music under tight deadlines and pressure. Viewers watch as raw lyrics evolve into fully produced songs, often with the help of celebrity guest producers or surprise collaborations. The format includes weekly eliminations, studio challenges, and live showcases that culminate in a finale where the top contestant earns the opportunity to have their winning song professionally released by a major artist or label. Streaming on Netflix, Hitmakers blends the personal journey of each songwriter with the broader reality of today’s music business—highlighting how rare, and rewarding, true originality can be.
