Teen charged after allegedly making guns at university

A teenager has been charged after allegedly manufacturing 3D-printed guns at the University of Wollongong. 

The alarm was raised after a gun was spotted inside a room at the university about 2.40pm yesterday. 

About seven hours later, detectives and tactical officers executed a search warrant at the campus and seized two guns and electronic devices.

An 18-year-old man was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station, where he was charged with five offences, including possessing an unauthorised firearm and possessing a digital blueprint for the manufacture of firearms.

He faced the Bail Division Court today.

A University of Wollongong spokesperson said the matter was resolved peacefully, and there is no ongoing risk to students or staff.

“The matter was resolved peacefully and we want to reassure the community that there is no ongoing risk to the safety of our students, staff or visitors and the campus remains open and operating as normal today,” the spokesperson said.

“The university is assisting police with their enquiry and will continue to support our community.”

The university operates security on campus and at student accommodation 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the year.
