SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A Shelbyville High School teacher was arrested last week amid allegations that he strangled a victim and broke her leg during a domestic incident. He has since been denied pretrial release.

Ryan Brown was arrested on Aug. 4 and is facing one count each of aggravated domestic battery, unlawful restraint and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

Shelby County State’s Attorney Ruth Woolery confirmed with WCIA that at the time of the alleged incident, Brown was employed at Shelbyville High School.

According to court records, Brown admitted to strangling the victim and breaking her leg during previous incidents. He also “made admissions” to the incident that mirror what the police reports say. The records also indicate that on a prior occasion, Brown admitted he choked the victim until she fell unconscious.

The court found that Brown poses a “real and present” threat to the alleged victim. Additionally, there are “no conditions” that will mitigate the threat caused by Brown, according to court records.

Brown will appear in court again on Aug. 25.

In a letter sent to district families, the Shelbyville School District said they have made substitute teacher arrangements for Brown’s classes when school begins on Thursday, Aug. 14.

The Shelbyville School District has been informed that an employee of the district was arrested.
We are naturally concerned by the report of the arrest and by the troubling allegations.

We understand the Shelbyville Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into
the alleged conduct. The District has no further information regarding the allegations and cannot comment further on the law enforcement investigation, the potential criminal prosecution or related legal procedures.

In the meantime, the Shelbyville School District is pursuing its own investigation into the
situation, and will take any necessary actions. The safety and security of our students is
paramount, and the appropriateness of the educational environment is of course crucial to our
mission. The administration and Board of Education will take appropriate steps to investigate
and will take any and all necessary action to protect the welfare and security of Shelbyville
School District students.
