Netflix has officially picked up the streaming rights to 2008’s Vampire Knight. Shoujo Vampire Anime Series Vampire Knight Bites Into New U.S. Streaming Home
The original Vampire Knight manga premiered in the pages of LaLa magazine in 2004 and was published in English in the U.S.-based Shojo Beat magazine. Vampire Knight follows Yuuki, a young woman whose earliest memory is of being attacked on a stormy winter night before being saved by the pureblood vampire Kaname Kuran. The series picks up 10 years after Yuki’s rescue and finds her living as the adoptive daughter of Kaien Cross, the headmaster of the elite Cross Academy boarding school. During the day, Cross Academy students attend regular classes, while at night, the school becomes home to an entirely different kind of curriculum charted out for its secret, vampiric class of students led by Kaname himself.
The Vampire Knight manga quickly became a favorite among readers, especially those with an affinity for the romance genre. Over the course of its original run, Vampire Knight amassed 19 volumes, with the final chapters being printed nearly a decade after the story began. Since its release, Vampire Knight has been expanded upon with light novel spinoffs, audio dramas, and an official sequel manga in the form of the still-ongoing Vampire Knight: Memories, printed in the pages of LaLa DX.
Although Vampire Knight is still a powerhouse franchise in the realm of dark fantasy romances, it’s also one of the more divisive vampire anime to reach a similar status in terms of overall popularity. Much of this is due to the nuances of some of the series’ romances, which form the crux of Vampire Knight as a whole. In particular, the romance between Yuki and Kaname has turned off many viewers due to their familial relationship, as has the Kuran family’s long history of incestuous relationships, which comes more and more into focus as Vampire Knight‘s overarching narrative unfolds along with its centuries of lore.
Vampire Knight will be available for streaming on Netflix in the U.S. on Aug. 15, 2025.
