Federal prosecutors allege that the crimes occurred while the child’s father was enlisted as a soldier at the Army base.

GEORGIA, USA — A Georgia couple accused of starving their child to death while stationed at Fort Stewart are now facing felony murder charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Georgia announced Friday.

A federal grand jury handed down an indictment charging Brandon M. Kelley, 29, and Stacey D. Kelley, 26, with crimes related to the unlawful death of their daughter, Vyolet Kelley, prosecutors said.

The federal court unsealed the indictment Friday, which alleges that the couple deprived their child of “adequate nourishment” and medical care while living at the Army base. Prosecutors claim the crimes occurred while Brandon Kelley was an enlisted soldier.

“The allegations in this case are heartbreaking on many levels,” said Acting United States Attorney Tara M. Lyons. “Our office will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to pursue justice.”

The couple was indicted on charges of felony murder and two counts of second-degree murder.

If convicted, the couple could face up to life in prison.

First Coast News has requested a copy of the indictment and is waiting to hear back.

The case was investigated by the United States Army Criminal Investigative Division and will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Timothy P. Dean and E. Greg Gilluly Jr.
