A Kansas woman with a history of drunk driving allegedly drank alcohol at a bar, got behind the wheel of a car without an ignition interlock device — ignoring terms of her probation — and slammed head-on into a car, killing a woman and seriously injuring her husband.

Kayla Errebo, 32, stands accused of second-degree murder, aggravated battery and reckless driving, among other charges, in the death of 55-year-old Deanna June Sommerfeld. The crash happened when Errebo allegedly crossed the center line and crashed into Sommerfeld”s vehicle early Friday on State Road 140 in Saline County, located in the middle of the Sunflower State.

Errebo was already on probation after she pleaded no contest to fleeing a police officer and driving under the influence, second offense. She was arrested for DUI in January 2024 and then again roughly five months later, records show. She was sentenced to a year of probation, which was set to end in November 2025.

The terms of her probation included three requirements: refrain from drinking alcohol, avoid frequenting bars, and drive only a car equipped with an ignition interlock device. But authorities allege she violated all three requirements.

The defendant allegedly admitted to drinking at the bar on Thursday night. She also allegedly drove a car that did not have the interlock device, which requires a driver’s breath to be alcohol-free before the car will start.

In addition to her husband, Sommerfeld also had two sons, according to a GoFundMe page. Sommerfeld’s friends told Wichita CBS affiliate KWCH that she was kind and eager to help others.

“Never get behind the wheel while you’re drinking,” one of Sommerfeld’s friends said in an interview with the TV station. “Unfortunately, this person hasn’t learned that lesson, and it cost the life of our good friend.”

Errebo remains in the Saline County Jail on a $1 million bond. She faces more than 40 years behind bars. Her next court date is scheduled for Aug. 22.
