AUGUSTA, Ga. () – The Richmond County School System held a transportation job fair on Wednesday.
The county is looking for bus drivers, mechanics, dispatchers and other transportation roles.
Kenneth Johnson Jr., the Director of Human Resources for the Richmond County School System says while they are almost fully staffed with teachers, they are still in need of support staff.
“There are those who teach and those who support those who teach. Those employees are responsible for making sure that we get our precious cargo to school on time every day and to home on time every day” said Johnson.
Johnson says finding bus drivers is a local, regional and state wide issue.
“Finding folks who are willing to continue to serve in those bus driver positions knowing the challenges that come with taking care of those responsibilities. It’s always something that we’re looking forward to filling and positions that sometimes are a little bit difficult for us to staff,” Johnson said.
He tells me bus drivers play a vital role not only for the school systems but for our community as well.
“When you think about operating a motor vehicle that’s carrying the lives of 40 or 50 plus students, we need to make sure that they are individuals who are qualified, they have the proper licenses and certifications in order to do that work,” Johnson said.
