SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Maria Morales walked into the Illinois State Fair as an immigrant. But after raising her hand and taking her oath, she left as an American in her home state.

“I think it’s a great thing for our family. We are trying to build a future for our kids now,” Morales said.

Maria was one of 400 people from 72 different countries who took their oath of citizenship on Wednesday.

“It takes dedication, resilience and courage. Many of you balance jobs, families and countless responsibilities while preparing for this moment,” Senator Tammy Duckworth said as she addressed the crowd.

Along with Duckworth the crowd was cheered on by Governor Pritzker, Representative Nikki Budzinski, and Senator Dick Durbin.

But Pritzker and Budzinski reminded those listening that in 2025 the debate on immigrants and their place in society remains contentious.

“I know this moment comes at a time when things feel uncertain, when the idea of immigration, of becoming an American has too often been politicized,” Budzinski told the crowd.

“Here we are, a nation still fighting to realize our best ideals. And we need you as citizens,” Pritzker said.

For Maria though, the focus of was all on her family and what her new identity as an American citizen means for her son.

“This is one of the things that we want to reach. We want to do the same thing with my son and teach him he can reach anything. He can do anything go anywhere and have any dream,” said Morales.
