Recently, the Dandadan manga has had one character who’s slipped behind his friends when it comes to strength: Jiji. Jiji lately has mostly relied on the Evil Eye’s power to fight powerful enemies — the problem is, he hasn’t been afforded nearly as many new forms as Okarun or gotten abilities that can match the manga’s later threats. However, Chapter 205 turns this around, giving Jiji a new power to call his own.

Jiji’s new ability doesn’t come out of nowhere either. The Evil Eye’s power is what allows Jiji to fight against the supernatural for most of the series. However, this new form doesn’t make him reliant on its power anymore. Instead, Jiji has merged his strengths with the Evil Eye’s skillset to create a brand-new form.

The Evil Eye’s Power Seems Less Impressive as The Manga Goes On

The Evil Eye’s abilities in Dandadan were very powerful upon his introduction. After fully possessing Jiji, the Evil Eye possesses the same supernatural strength, speed, and durability as Okarun during his own transformed state. The Evil Eye can create constructs based on the grudges of the people sacrificed by the Kito family, creating barriers to deflect attacks. Up until Jiji wrested back control of his body, it seemed like the Evil Eye was nearly unstoppable. However, as more powerful aliens and spirits were introduced, the Evil Eye’s powers stopped being as impressive.

As time has gone on, more spirits and extraterrestrials with impressive abilities have made the Evil Eye look subpar by comparison. The invasive spirit may be strong, but its strength is nothing compared to the threat of aliens like Hastur or the dreadful urban legend, the Fairy-Tale Card. As a result, The Evil Eye’s power has felt much less threatening over time. However, Jiji’s newfound control of Ki has allowed him to work in unison with the spirit he shares his body with.

Jiji’s New Ki Techniques Combine His Skillset With the Evil Eye’s

During recent Dandadan mangas, Jiji begins practicing Ki to help control the urges of the Evil Eye. Under Seiko’s tutelage, Jiji learns to use Ki techniques to fire powerful blasts of energy from his palms. After honing his Ki after the Kur’s invasion, Jiji becomes skilled enough to fire a huge energy wave from his hand. Slowly but surely, Jiji is becoming more assured in his own power rather than the Evil Eye’s.

This culminates in Dandadan Chapter 205. In his fight against the yokai, Enenra (also known as St. Germain), Jiji reveals a new form that he has complete control over. Jiji’s new form is similar to how he looks when he’s under the Evil Eye’s possession, but there are key differences between the two. The lack of black markings and the half-opened third eye give Jiji a more humanoid appearance and signify his greater control over the Evil Eye.

Using this new power, Jiji is quick to turn the tables against Enenra. Jiji manages to overwhelm the yokai with powerful spiral ki blasts, knocking him back. This surprised Enenra, who was sure that the boy was powerless and that any attack that Jiji took head-on would lead to his death. The fight is still ongoing, but it’s not hard to see how Jiji’s powers will develop from here.

Jiji’s Ki Abilities Can Only Grow Stronger From Here

Much like Okarun, there are still plenty of opportunities for Jiji to increase his strength and Ki abilities. The young Ki user may have combined his strengths with the Evil Eye’s, but Jiji has only been using his ki techniques in his battle with Enenra. It’s possible that becoming more in sync with the Evil Eye could allow Jiji to harness its abilities. He could create the same kind of barriers the Evil Eye used to block projectiles or make grudge balls to sling at opponents.

Jiji’s training certainly isn’t over yet. Despite his new mastery over Ki, Jiji has yet to practice it in tandem with his new form. This gives the story plenty of time to have him develop new techniques that can accommodate his new power, drawing on the Evil Eye’s unique skillset. The fight against Enenra is far from over, but it will be exciting to see what other abilities Jiji’s new form will grant him.

It’s clear that there’s going to be more to Jiji’s new form than just combining his strength with the Evil Eye’s, though. The form has just been unveiled to Dandadan readers, and it’s still unclear if there are any new abilities that come with it. The Evil Eye may have been able to create constructs, but how will that play into Jiji’s new control over Spiral Power? Jiji has used his control over the energy to twist the shape of his blasts, but there’s no telling what new spiral abilities he might have in his new form.

It’s entirely possible that Jiji’s Spiral Power can grant him new skills to use. Jiji has already enhanced his Evil Gun using Spiral Energy. The technique dealt a significant injury to Enenra in his fight with the smoke yokai, injuring someone that’s impossible to hit conventionally. Other Spiral techniques that allow Jiji to create walls or barriers to defend himself could be a huge boon in future fights.

The poster for the Dandadan anime depicts Jiji and Okarun walking forward with nervous expressions while various shadowed monsters are looking at them.
