LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WJHL) — The former Letcher County sheriff accused of murdering a judge in his chambers is appearing for a status hearing Friday.

Shawn “Mickey” Stines is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of District Judge Kevin Mullins on Sept. 19, 2024. He was later charged with an additional charge of murder of a public official.

Stines has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.

Friday’s hearing is set to begin at 1 p.m. News Channel 11 will stream the hearing live on WJHL.com.

Stines retired from his position as sheriff on Sept. 30, 2024 after his arrest. In a letter announcing his retirement, a law office said on behalf of Stines that his decision to retire was not “a result of any ultimatum or in any way a concession to any allegations.”

Video played in the courtroom in October 2024 depicts Stines firing a gun at Mullins, who fell from his chair afterward.

In March, Stines’s attorney notified the court that they would be preparing an insanity defense.
