STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – A 3-year-old child has died after the child was shot by an unsecured firearm on Spring Street in Struthers Friday.

First responders flooded the 400 block of Spring Street just before 1 p.m. At a home in the area, police could be seen taking evidence two boxes that are typically used to store guns and a paper bag out the front door and placing them in an unmarked cruiser.

Capt. D.J Aldish, acting chief, said the department received multiple calls around noon from South Avenue and Mathews Road, but there was some confusion at first about where the incident happened.

When asked what happened, Aldish said: “The worst possible situation happened. The child got ahold of a loaded firearm.”

Aldish said there were two adults with the child when the child was shot.

Emergency crews who met the child and adults in Boardman took the child to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. The coroner was called there later on Friday.

Aldish said there were several police officers at the hospital to continue the investigation.
