CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign County Coroner has confirmed the identity of a man whose car collided with an Amtrak train in July.
Laurie Brauer, coroner, said 33-year-old Kyle Clevenger of Rantoul died from injuries he received after the collision. It happened on July 27 on Leverette Road in Champaign County.
An autopsy was performed at the Sangamon County Regional Autopsy Facility, Brauer said. The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and the Champaign Coroner’s Office are investigating.
After the crash the sheriff’s office said preliminary information indicated that a vehicle driving eastbound moved around activated crossing gates and was hit by an Amtrak train driving northbound. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire, the sheriff’s office said. No injuries were reported among the train passengers or crew members.
WCIA spoke with Clevenger’s family when they gathered to honor his memory after the crash. Hundreds gathered at Douglass Park on July 29 and more than 300 orange and black balloons were launched for the Urbana alum.
