Eagles trade for John Metchie III from Texans in receiving boost

The Eagles added wide receiver John Metchie III in a trade with the Texans on Sunday, with the start of the regular season only a few weeks away.

According to ESPN, the Texans’ sixth-round draft choice and Metchie are being traded to Philadelphia in return for tight end Harrison Bryant and a fifth-round draft pick.

This trade is considered a low-risk, high-reward opportunity for the Eagles. NBC Sports Philadelphia noted that Bryant was unlikely to secure a spot on the 53-man roster post-camp, and this transaction further strengthens Philadelphia’s wide receiver corps.

Metchie is coming off a season where he had a career-best 254 receiving yards on 24 catches while reaching the end zone once for Houston.

He also appeared in both Texans playoff games last year.

Metchie, who was drafted by Houston as a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, will integrate into a wide receiver group featuring A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, Johnny Wilson, Darius Cooper, and Ainias Smith.

He was also teammates with DeVonta Smith during their college days at Alabama.

Recently, the Eagles also orchestrated a trade with the Raiders to pick up cornerback Jakorian Bennett, and one NFL GM doesn’t think that the Eagles are done just yet, either.

“Don’t think Eagles are done with trades. They have so many picks next year and that team is always gonna be aggressive,” an AFC general manager told NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Bryant signed a one-year, $1.2 million deal with the Eagles in March and collected nine catches for 86 yards last season with the Raiders.

He was selected in the 2020 draft and spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Browns.
