MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — With temperatures soaring in Central Illinois, sun safety is more important than ever. While it’s always important to protect yourself from the sun, the Macon County Health Department is providing the community with a couple of reminders during Summer Sun Safety Month.

The health department said that just by making a few changes, you can reduce your risk of sun-related problems.

First, it’s important to remember that excessive tanning can be dangerous. Avoid harmful UV rays from the sun or tanning beds. Even one tanning bed session can raise your risk of skin cancer. And for those under 35, the health department said that using a tanning bed increases the chance of melanoma by 59% — using them for more than 10 years can bump your risk up by 125%. If you want to tan, try a self-tanner instead, the health department suggested.

You should apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to all exposed skin. Make sure to reapply every two hours to stay covered up.

The health department also said that you need to stay hydrated when out in the sun. Drinking plenty of water helps to prevent dehydration, but be sure to watch out for signs such as thirst, tiredness or feeling dizzy.
