EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. () — It’s one of Georgia’s most haunting child abuse cases and today, it’s back in court in Effingham County. Hearings are set to resume in the Elwyn Crocker case nearly seven years after two children were found buried in their backyard.

Both sides could finally move forward with key decisions that could shape how the case unfolds at trial.

You might remember back in June, the last scheduled hearing was delayed when the Crocker’s defense team said they weren’t ready. Attorneys are expected to debate today about the evidence the jury will be allowed to see, including crime scene photos and digital files.

Elwyn Crocker Sr. is charged in the deaths of his two teenage children: Mary and Elwyn Jr. Their bodies were discovered in 2018, buried behind the family’s Guyton home. He’s facing multiple charges, including malice murder, child cruelty, and concealing a death. Now he could also face the death penalty if convicted.

Monday’s hearing is expected to address motions, including whether graphic crime scene photos can be shown to a jury and which electronic devices can be used as evidence. Prosecutors argue that the devices show shared abuse among several family members, while the defense wants the judge to suppress that evidence, claiming ownership of the devices is unclear.

This marks the first time in weeks the court is expected to actually take up and rule on those issues. If that happens, it could bring the case one step closer to trial.

will be in the courtroom today and will keep you updated as the hearing unfolds.
