TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. () — The Tybee Island Ocean Rescue (TIOR) has issued a beach safety advisory ahead of hurricane Erin.

While hurricane Erin is not forecasted to make landfall in the area, Erin’s indirect impacts will include rip currents along the coast as well as rough surf and an increase in dangerous water conditions, according to ‘s Storm Team 3.

Rip currents are the cause of 100 deaths approximately annually in the United States according to data from the National Ocean Service (NOAA).

The TIOR is advising visitors and residents to pay close attention to weather conditions and be on the lookout for rapidly changing surf.

“Even when a hurricane is far offshore, it can create dangerous conditions here at home,” said TIOR officials. “Rip currents and powerful waves can catch swimmers off guard, so it’s important that everyone stays alert and respects the warnings.”

Here are some recommendations from TIOR to ensure beachgoer’s safety:

  • Swim near a lifeguard.
  • Obey all flag warnings and instructions from lifeguards.
  • Stay out of the water if conditions look rough or warnings are posted.
  • Keep a close eye on children and inexperienced swimmers.
