Rising star Drew Olivia Tillman is stepping back into the spotlight with the return of Tyler Perry’s Netflix political dramedy, Miss Governor, formally known as, Tyler Perry’s She The People.

The rebranded series, formerly known under a different title, continues its first season on August 14, 2025, delivering fresh twists, deep storytelling, and more of the fan-favorite character that’s helped cement Tillman as one to watch.

Tillman plays Lola Dunkerson, the daughter of newly elected Lieutenant Governor Antoinette Dunkerson, portrayed by Terri J. Vaughn. Her bold, emotionally rich performance has earned praise from viewers and critics alike. “Being part of Miss Governor has truly been transformative,” Tillman shared in a recent press release. “The cast and creators are passionate about reflecting real voices, and this show lets us do that with humor and heart.”

Born in Washington, D.C., Tillman splits her time between coasts while continuing her work both on and off screen. In addition to acting, she is committed to advocacy and mentorship, using her platform to inspire young people and spark meaningful change in her community.

This year also marks an expansion of her artistic reach, as Tillman explores new music projects. “Music is my first language,” she shared. “It’s how I connect, how I lead, and how I dream.” Fans can expect original material in the future, offering another way for her to connect with audiences on a personal level.

A veteran performer despite her young age, Tillman’s resume includes roles in Roxanne Roxanne on Netflix, NBC’s This Is Us, ABC’s Mixed-ish, and CBS’s FBI. She has been recognized as one of the top 42 actors to watch, a list that has included many of today’s most celebrated talents. Her voice has even reached the global stage, performing at the United Nations for International Women’s Day.

Miss Governor, created by Tyler Perry and Niya Palmer, follows Antoinette Dunkerson as she navigates life as a working mother unexpectedly thrust into the role of Lieutenant Governor. Alongside political intrigue, the series explores themes of family, leadership, and resilience. Executive producers include Perry, Palmer, Vaughn, and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Part two of Season One premieres globally on Netflix on August 14, 2025.

In addition to everything on her plate,Tillman is ensuring that the next generation of entertainment hopefuls have a good start to their careers. 

Tillman is sponsoring a free acting workshop and Q&A for DMV-area students, in partnership with I Coach Stars. 

The program will provide six local students direct coaching with I Coach Stars founder, Sharra Dade, in addition to having an opportunity to hear directly from Tillman herself about navigating the entertainment industry, staying grounded, and creating opportunities for themselves.

This initiative reflects Tillmans’s ongoing commitment to representation, mentorship, and amplifying Black voices in the arts.
