The coldest temperature of the year in Australia was recorded last night as yet more rain returns for millions in Sydney and along the east coast.

With an overnight minimum of -13 degrees, Thredbo Top Station in the NSW ski resort registered the nation’s coldest night of 2025 by more than three degrees, Weatherzone reports.

It put the big dip down to a rare windless winter night at the 1957m-high spot.

It was the coldest temperature recorded anywhere in NSW since 2018 and the coldest in Australia since -13.5 degrees was recorded in Liawenee on Tasmanian’s Central Plateau on July 4, 2024.

In Sydney, it got down to just under seven degrees overnight as the city faces another week of rain just days after a record-breaking deluge.

The grim forecast is for relentless showers until at least Sunday.

Heavy falls and even flooding are possible all along the east coast.

The deluge made it the city’s wettest August weekend since 1998, according to Weatherzone.

There was just over 80mm of rain recorded – that’s slightly more than what is usually expected for the whole month.

Up to 80mm of rain is expected over the south-west of Western Australia, with up to 40mm in Perth, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
