Lola Salter celebrates her 107th birthday, reflecting on life as a retired nurse and national treasure.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Lola Salter has witnessed more than a century of American history, and on Sunday evening, the Charlotte resident added another year to her remarkable journey as she celebrated her 107th birthday.

Surrounded by family, Salter reflected on a life that has spanned nearly 11 decades, offering wisdom gleaned from experiences few people ever accumulate.

“She’s walking history literally,” Erica, her daughter, said. “So, having someone who can recount over 100 years of life is amazing. She’s truly a treasure, and she’s a national treasure.”

When asked about the secret to reaching 107 years, Salter offered a perspective grounded in faith rather than formula.

“As a matter of fact, I don’t think there is a secret,” Salter said. “I think we are eternal beings, and I think that’s what God planned for me to do.”

A retired nurse with decades of service, Salter believes her career caring for others has contributed significantly to her longevity and health. She views nursing as more than just a profession—it’s been a calling that shaped not only her life but influenced generations of her family.

“I think nursing is one profession that people make the greatest contribution that you can—that can be made to humanity—taking care of ourselves and taking care of others,” Salter said. “Without that there would be no existing, there would be no life.”

Her daughter Erica hopes younger family members will learn from Salter’s example of service and compassion.

“Love—just the ability to love others and care for others I think is what we need,” Erica said. “She’s been into the helping professions for all of our life, and I think that’s greatly influenced the choices that I’ve made and the choices that my sons have made as well.”

As Salter begins another year of life, her family sees her not just as a beloved matriarch but as a living connection to more than a century of American experience, embodying the values of service and care that she believes are essential to a meaningful existence.
