Pickleball has dominated the cultural zeitgeist, and will soon be making its way to our screens.
Apple Original Films revealed on Monday that they have acquired director Josh Greenbaum‘s new sports comedy The Dink, which sees a washed-up pro tennis player (played by Jake Johnson) “who, desperate to save a struggling club and earn his father’s respect, is compelled to break a sacred vow and do the unthinkable: play pickleball.”
Named after the soft shot landed by a pickleball player at the kitchen line, The Dink will also feature Ben Stiller (who also serves as an executive producer on the project), Mary Steenburgen, Ed Harris, Chloe Fineman, Aaron Chen, Patton Oswalt, Chris Parnell, Christine Taylor, Andy Roddick, and John McEnroe.
Johnson shared the news on Instagram, telling fans that he is “excited to partner with @appletv on this one.”
“I love the movie. It’s a ton of fun. So many funny performances. #The Dink,” he added.
The New Girl alum was also announced as the star of Apple TV+‘s upcoming dark comedic thriller series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed earlier this summer, in which he will work alongside co-star Tatiana Maslany.
This also marks another Apple TV+ collaboration for Stiller, who directed and executive produced Severance and is also putting out a documentary about his late parents, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. The doc, titled Stiller & Meara: Nothing is Lost, is set to begin streaming on Oct. 24.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film is in post-production. A release date for The Dink has yet to be announced.
