A 23-year-old father in Missouri has been arrested after authorities say he beat his 2-month-old son so severely that the medical team treating the infant said his injuries were akin to “being dropped from a 2 story window.”

Storm L. Sinclair was taken into custody over the weekend and charged with one count of abuse or neglect of a child, court records show. According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff”s Office at about 7:15 a.m. on Saturday responded to a home in Fort Osage to assist Emergency Medical Services with a 2-month-old baby suffering from a severe head injury.

When questioned by paramedics at the scene, Sinclair allegedly said he was feeding the boy a bottle and preparing to burp him, but while “transitioning” the child to a burping position, he claimed the newborn “kicked” and fell onto the “hard floor.” An officer noted that while speaking to the medic, Sinclair kept repeating the phrase, “I’m sorry.”

The victim was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital for treatment. While there, the medical staff advised investigators that the baby had internal cranial bleeding and was “covered in bruises.” The staff further advised that Sinclair’s story about the provenance of his son’s injuries “did not match up” with the severity of the infant’s condition.

From the affidavit:

Deputies spoke with doctors at Children’s Mercy who advised [the victim] had bruises all over his head, entire face, left ear cartilage, his jaw, and blood in his nostrils. As well as bruises on his chest, abdomen, arms, and scrotal bruising. The doctors advised [the victim] had “pattern bruising” on his back, small bruises to his buttocks, and bleeding in multiple areas of his brain. The doctors advised [the victim] had elevated liver enzymes. The doctors advised [the victim] ‘s injuries were more extensive than falling from a bed and could come from shaking him, a series of hard blows, or being dropped from a 2 story window.

Ultimately, the medical staff concluded that the victim’s injuries were consistent with physical abuse.

When confronted with the supposed evidence of child abuse, Sinclair allegedly responded by stating, “I’m sorry, I don’t know what to say,” according to the affidavit. He also made comments about how he wanted his son “to be a better man than he is,” adding that he understood “he probably won’t be in his [son’s] life anymore.”

In a formal interview with detectives, Sinclair allegedly repeated that he dropped his son on the floor after the newborn “kicked.” However, this time his story allegedly included several additional grisly details.

“[Sinclair] advised he picked [the victim] up and thought he was choking so he struck him in the back with an open hand,” the affidavit states. “[Sinclair] advised at that point he laid [the victim] on the bed and struck him with a closed hammer fist in the abdomen one time. [Sinclair] advised he smacked [the victim] on the left side of the head.”

Sinclair also reportedly told police that he shook the child’s head “from side to side as hard as he could” and that he was “trying to harm” the victim, the affidavit said.

Sinclair was being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on bond of $25,000, but was released after posting 10% in cash, records show. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 26 for a bond review hearing.
