Monroe then went home, got a gun and returned to the park, firing approximately 17 shots. Hamros was struck multiple times including once in the head, according to prosecutors.
Monroe’s attorney said that Hamros stole the couple’s phones and threatened them, adding that one phone was found in Hamros’ pocket at the scene.
A couple of weeks after the shooting, Monroe voluntarily surrendered himself to police.
Nearly three years after the murder, Monroe pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder.
A judge sentenced him to 20 years in IDOC. He will be given credit for the nearly three years he already served.
