WASHINGTON () The Trump administration’s federal takeover of the Washington police force has entered its second week.

National Guard troops deployed to D.C. amid President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown could soon be armed.

More troops are coming later this week to aid in Trump’s efforts. The Republican governors of Ohio, West Virginia and South Carolina announced they would be sending troops.

West Virginia will deploy 350 National Guard troops to D.C., Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said 150 troops from his state will arrive in the coming days, and South Carolina is sending 200 troops. There are currently 800 troops deployed in the area.

In a post on social platform X, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves announced that he approved the deployment of 200 of the state’s National Guard troops to D.C.

“Crime is out of control there, and it’s clear something must be done to combat it,” Reeves said. “Americans deserve a safe capital city that we can all be proud of. I know the brave men and women of our National Guard will do an excellent job enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement.”

With Mississippi’s deployment, the total number of troops that will be stationed in D.C. is estimated to be 1,700.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser took to social media to disapprove of the deployment, saying, “American soldiers and airmen policing American citizens on American soil is #UnAmerican.”

A White House official told that nearly 400 people had been arrested since the start of the takeover last week, with several tied to narcotics and firearm-related offenses.
