Cocoa butter, also known as theobroma oil, is a pale-yellow, edible fat derived from the cocoa bean (Theobroma cacao). This ingredient is found in an array of products ranging from body lotions and lip balms to high-quality chocolates. If you’re curious about which chocolate brands actually incorporate real cocoa butter, we’ve done the research for you. Below are 7 chocolate brands that authentically use real cocoa butter.
Ghirardelli

Ghirardelli chocolate is on the pricier side, but that’s because the brand insists on using top-tier ingredients, including cocoa butter. According to the company, cocoa butter is the unique ivory-colored fat making up 50 to 54% of roasted cocoa beans. Although it has minimal flavor on its own, cocoa butter greatly enhances the richness and depth of chocolate’s taste. It makes chocolate smooth when melted and crisp once it hardens. Because cocoa butter melts at body temperature, chocolate luxuriously dissolves on your tongue. It plays a key role in providing the creamy, smooth texture and lengthy finish that define premium chocolates, as noted on their website.
Cadbury

Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate contains cocoa butter in both the UK and the US. In the US, Cadbury chocolates adhere to FDA regulations, using solely cocoa butter as their fat component. Meanwhile, in the UK, Cadbury is permitted to include other vegetable oils, such as palm and shea, alongside cocoa butter.
Lindt (Excellence line)

Lindt’s premium Excellence dark chocolates include cocoa butter (though not always on the front of the label), contributing to the familiar smooth melt—especially in their high-percentage dark and flavored variants.
Hershey’s

Hershey’s uses real cocoa butter in some bars, including Hershey’s Milk Chocolate. However, look at the labels, as it also uses substitutes in others.
Nestlé

Nestlé’s use of cocoa butter varies widely by product and region — some use cocoa butter, others don’t. However, many of its chocolate products, including Kit Kat, list cocoa butter as a main ingredient.
Dove/Galaxy

Dove and Galaxy use cocoa butter in most milk and dark chocolate bars. The ingredient list of Dove Milk Chocolate bars clearly lists cocoa butter.
Cortes

Cortes Chocolate, made in Puerto Rico, is one of my favorite chocolate bars in the world. The ingredient list includes sugar, Chocolate Liquor, Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin (an Emulsifier), Salt, and Vanillin (an Artificial Flavor).
