WILMINGTON, N.C. — Four firefighters were injured after a building exploded Tuesday in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The explosion was captured on video by someone nearby.

Wilmington Police said the blast was likely caused by a traffic crash that ruptured a gas line.

Officials told ABC affiliate WPDE that a vehicle turned from New Center Drive onto Bob King Drive, hitting gas lines before driving on.

The explosion happened at East Carolina Veterinary Medical Center. No one was in the building at the time, which was under construction.

Initial reports said three firefighters were injured, but ABC affiliate WWAY learned that four were hurt. The firefighters had what appeared to be minor, non-life-threatening injuries, but a third suffered severe burns on his arms and hands, WPDE said.

Police said the driver showed signs of impairment and was taken into custody. WWAY identified the driver as 46-year-old Jason Lee Beach, of Wilmington.

He was charged with DWI-felony serious injury, possession of drug paraphernalia, hit and run/leave scene, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane. He was being held under a $100,000 secured bond at the New Hanover Detention Center.

On Tuesday afternoon, the veterinary center said on social media that “Emergency crews are actively working to control the fire, and we are incredibly grateful for their ongoing efforts and bravery. At this time, we are still gathering details and assessing the situation. We will share more information as soon as possible. We are grateful to report that the ECVMC staff and construction team are accounted for and safe. As this location is under construction, there were no pets on the premises.

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with concern and support. Your kindness and care remind us why this community is so special.”
