AUGUSTA, Ga ()- An overnight shooting in Augusta took the life of a toddler and injured his mother.

NewsChannel 6 spoke to several neighbors and while most of them did not want to speak on camera, they all say they are heartbroken by the news of the toddler’s death and are now afraid more shootings like this could happen.

“Things escalated and then they start shooting. And I heard pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow,” said Lawrence Freeman, a neighbor of the victims.

The shooting happened just before 1:30 in the morning on Wednesday at an apartment in the Allen Homes neighborhood. A female victim was shot and so was a three year-old child. They were both taken to the Wellstar MCG emergency room where the child, identified as Bryson Murray, died about an hour later.

“So she had just lost her husband a couple of months ago. And now she losing her baby and she just got shot,” Freeman said.

One woman we talked to said that she heard the shots and immediately went into her 10-year-old’s bedroom to check and make sure she was okay. She said that she thought something like this was inevitable because some people in the neighborhood are always fighting and waving guns around.

Freeman said an argument led up to the shooting.

“It was earlier that afternoon when everything started escalating. You know, beefing going on in the neighborhood here.”

Freeman said that he is frustrated that gun violence has taken another young life. He added that he has been working with the neighborhood to try to prevent things like this from happening.

“I’m here at the Resident’s Association. We’re trying to gain awareness to get our youth back on track and try to gain help to the families who stay out here. And then outsiders coming here want to start a ruckus.”

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is looking for two people in this case. 40-year old Willie Lewis and 30-year-old Shynice Cannida are both wanted for questioning only. They are both known to frequent the Allen Homes area.

The investigation into the shooting continues. If you have any information about it, you are asked to call the sheriff’s office at either (706) 821-1427 or (706) 821-1020.
