Final Battle with Pancreatic Cancer and Last Public Appeal

In December 2023, not long after his 87th birthday, Caprio courageously shared his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in a heartfelt video, asking his followers to “please pray for me” and acknowledging their unwavering support. By mid-2024, he successfully completed radiation therapy, celebrating this achievement with a bell-ringing ceremony.

On August 19, 2025, he posted from his hospital bed, admitting a health setback. “I had a setback… I’m back in the hospital now… remember me in your prayers once more,” he asked. The next day, August 20, 2025, he passed away peacefully at the age of 88 following a “long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer”.

Final Public Statements: Faith, Family, and Legacy

Caprio’s final communications captured his unwavering grace. His family’s tribute read: “Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions…”.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee ordered state flags flown at half-staff and named Caprio a “Rhode Island treasure.” He said, “He was more than a jurist – he was a symbol of empathy on the bench…”.

Reflecting on Caprio’s public appeal from his hospital bed, one read: “Last year I asked you to pray for me… Unfortunately I’ve had a setback… remember me in your prayers once more.” The video embodied his belief in the power of prayer and community support.
