WISE COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) — A man faces various charges, including felony eluding and reckless driving, after allegedly fleeing from deputies in Wise County on Thursday.
According to a press release from the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, deputies reportedly attempted to stop a silver Porsche driven by William Marion Huneycutt III in the Cold Springs Drive area of Appalachia.
Huneycutt allegedly fled from police, and the vehicle was later found at his home in the 100 block of Cold Springs Drive.
Deputies believed that Huneycutt had barricaded himself inside the home, the sheriff’s office reported.
“A search warrant was obtained, and the area surrounding the home was monitored while tactical teams responded,” the press release stated. “Despite repeated attempts to contact the suspect, there was no reply. Tactical teams entered the home using chemical agents and cameras but found it empty. Evidence suggested the suspect was likely in a wooded area of National Forest nearby and had never been inside the residence while tactical teams were on scene.”
Search teams, including a K-9 unit, found supplies, tents and hunting blinds in the woods, “indicating [Huneycutt] was still in the area,” according to the sheriff’s office.
On Friday morning, deputies were informed that Huneycutt was seen in the Cold Springs Drive area asking for help.
He was later arrested and charged with the following:
- Felony eluding
- Assault on law enforcement (two counts)
- Reckless driving
- Petit larceny/shoplifting
- Various traffic offenses
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be placed, the sheriff’s office stated.
Wise County Sheriff E. Grant Kilgore thanked law enforcement, first responders and personnel who assisted in the incident.
