When Meghan Markle met Prince Harry she was a working actress starring on the show Suits as Rachel Zane. But before she landed that gig on the legal drama she, like other aspiring actors in Hollywood, was out auditioning for other roles that came about.

Royal biographer Sean Smith wrote about one of her memorable auditions in his book Meghan Misunderstood.

The author relayed a story he heard about an early audition Meghan had for one role where she was really vying for another part. After the director asked Meghan if she could repeat a line, the future duchess said: “I can. However, I’ve read the script and I really respond to this other role and I’d like to audition for that.”

The Daily Mail noted that Smith wrote, “This was not how auditions worked. ‘This panic spread across the room because who does that? Who takes that sort of risk?’ She didn’t get the part she wanted, but she did secure Hot Girl #1.”

 The role was for the movie A Lot Like Love with Ashton Kutcher.

“She sits beside Ashton on a plane and says ‘Hi,’ but then has a brief exchange with the passenger sitting across the gangway and tells him her name is Natalie,” Smith explained.

Meghan had a few small parts and guest spots on TV shows like General Hospital and CSI: NY before she began working on Suits in 2011.
