Coalition petitions NUC to sanction GehGeh University, others

A coalition of academics, students, alumni, and concerned citizens has petitioned the National Universities Commission (NUC) to take urgent action against content creators who use the term “university” in parody institutions.

In a formal letter to the NUC’s Executive Secretary and Board, the group expressed alarm over the growing trend of self-styled platforms such as “GehGeh University” and “Blessing CEO University.” The coalition argued that such labels, though often presented as comedy, undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s higher education system.

Dr. Charles Ekeh, spokesperson for the Coalition for Protection of Academic Integrity in Nigeria, said the issue is not merely humorous but damaging.

“The term ‘university’ is a legally protected designation earned through rigorous accreditation. Allowing comedians to adopt this title dilutes its meaning and disrespects the years of dedication and excellence behind genuine academic institutions,” he said.

Ekeh added that the indiscriminate use of “university” by social media personalities could mislead unsuspecting audiences, creating opportunities for scams and further complicating Nigeria’s battle against fraudulent degree mills.

He noted that under the NUC Act, no institution or entity is permitted to use “university” in its name without formal approval, stressing that failure to enforce the law diminishes the commission’s regulatory authority.

The coalition’s demands include a public condemnation of the practice by the NUC, the issuance of cease-and-desist orders to offending social media accounts, and cooperation with the National Communications Commission (NCC) and digital platforms to ensure compliance. They also urged the launch of a public awareness campaign to help Nigerians differentiate accredited universities from parody or fraudulent entities.

While clarifying that the protest was not an attempt to stifle creativity, Ekeh insisted that protecting education must take priority.

“Defending our academic institutions’ integrity is not a joke,” he said.
