Staff report

JONESVILLE, Fla. – Caden Freeney, 18, was arrested last night after a firearm and marijuana were reportedly found in his backpack during a traffic stop.

At about 10:07 p.m. on August 22, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of NW 136th Boulevard and NW 132nd Circle after observing a sedan driving at a high rate of speed with no rear lights.

The deputy reported smelling marijuana as he approached the car, and Freeney, a passenger in the car, reportedly said he had smoked “weed” earlier in the evening; the occupants did not have medical marijuana cards.

A search of the car reportedly produced a backpack on the floor of the back seat, containing a loaded Glock 21 and about 12.4 grams of marijuana; small pieces of marijuana were also found in the seat where Freeney had been sitting. Another occupant of the car reportedly said Freeney had the backpack with him when he got into the car.

Post Miranda, Freeney reportedly said his money was in the backpack.

Freeney has been charged with unlawfully carrying a concealed firearm and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. He is on juvenile probation for grand theft of a motor vehicle and resisting an officer without violence. Judge Gloria Walker set bail at $20,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
