The shooting happened around 1:17 p.m. in the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue in Kenwood, Chicago police said.

The victim, a 5-year-old boy, was inside an apartment at the location when he was shot in the head, police said.

The boy was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.

The child’s family has been speaking to Pastor Donovan Price at the hospital.

“It seems like the gunshot was self-inflicted by the child who got a hold of the gun,” Price said. “This just seems to be a tragic accident. Beautiful family. One of those things you pray never happens and unfortunately one misstep or something can cause tragedy.”

The exact circumstances of the shooting were not immediately known.

Investigators were still at the building late Sunday afternoon, where they said a weapon was recovered.

No one was in custody as Chicago police continue to investigate.
