CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A group you might recognize for the boxes of cookies they sell has gotten an upgrade in Champaign.
The Girl Scouts of Central Illinois had a grand opening celebration for their new service center on Sunday. The organization’s leadership said they’ve needed a new space for some scouts in the area.
The new building is three times larger than their last one. They plan to use the space for programs and meetings. There is also a boutique inside. In total, the branch has 10,000 girls serving 38 counties in the area.
There is one especially big piece that they’re most excited — it’s one that no other Girl Scout center has.
“Build-A-Bear and Girl Scouts has a long-standing partnership. And really, because Build-A-Bear was created in order to give kids a little bit more say over their purchasing, and when they purchase something, that it’s really meaningful to them. We here at Girl Scouts want girls to feel empowered and to make decisions very strategically and thoughtfully, whether that has to do with money or it has to do with something that they want,” the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois CEO, Jennifer Sedbrook, said.
She added that the Build-A-Bear workshop is open to anyone.
During Sunday’s event, the attendees celebrated the new building with an ice cream truck, activities, inflatables, and live music.
