AUSTIN (KXAN) A man in Texas has been arrested for allegedly breaking into an animal shelter and releasing most of the dogs from their kennels, according to local authorities.
Jacob G. Bender, 38, is facing criminal trespass charges.
As a result of the incident, one dog died and at least five dogs sustained injuries. The shelter, Austin Pets Alive!, said all the missing dogs were found and accounted for.
The break-in occurred around 1:20 a.m. local time on Aug. 14. However, officers were not notified of the incident for hours.
According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded to a burglary urgent call at APA! around 5 a.m. Staff later arrived at the facility, secured the animals and returned them to their enclosures.
This case is under investigation by the Animal Cruelty Unit. According to APD, Bender may face additional charges.
Attorney information was not listed for Bender as of Monday.
