LOS ANGELES — We’re not in Kansas anymore!

Take a step into Grand Rapids, Minnesota – the hometown of Judy Garland – and the location of one of the most infamous heists in American history in ABC News Studios’ “Ruby Red Handed: Stealing America’s Most Famous Pair of Shoes.”

Known as “The Traveling Shoes,” collector Michael Shaw’s set of prized, screen-worn ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz” had a storied exhibition history, traveling for decades nationwide for fans to see.

It was in 2005 when Shaw loaned the famous pair to the Judy Garland Museum, and they were ultimately stolen.

In “Ruby Red Handed,” Maria Awes, investigative journalist and executive producer of the documentary, unravels “the quirky nature of the leads and the discoveries, the finds, the tips, the people,” as she puts it. “I’ve never experienced anything like that,” she tells On The Red Carpet.

The crime is described as the “perfect case.”

“This is a case where you’ve got somebody who breaks in wearing gloves, takes these shoes, and there’s nothing to go on,” Awes explains.

For more than a decade, the case sat without any promising leads, with investigator after investigator taking it on to no avail. That was until 2018, when all the pieces started to come together.

From the FBI, to a possible black market connection, and more, Awes says “Ruby Red Handed” will “satisfy anyone who wants a good, true crime caper.”

And like any good true crime flick, “we are breaking some brand new information in here. So, you know, every good true crime series has new information that hasn’t been out there. That’s the same case here. I think the story that people think they know about what happened to the slippers is maybe not exactly what happened to the shoes,” Awes teases.

The crime only bolstered the shoes’ uniqueness, heightening their value drastically.

Awes revealing, “When they were stolen, and with all the intrigue and the mystery and everything, you know, those shoes made history all over again when they were ultimately recovered and auctioned off for $28 million.”

Follow the yellow brick road to discover how these historic Hollywood slippers were eventually recovered in “Ruby Red Handed: Stealing America’s Most Famous Pair of Shoes.” It’s streaming now on Hulu.
