BLUFFTON, S.C. () — Bluffton Town Council (BTC) wants to hear your opinions on golf cart regulations.

BTC will host a public workshop to gather feedback on local regulations for golf carts and similar vehicle use Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 5:30 p.m. in Town Hall’s Council Chambers (20 Bridge Street).

Your thoughts, opinions and feedback will be heard. Councilmembers will decide whether additional regulations are needed to ensure safety on Bluffton’s roads.

A new statewide golf cart law became effective May 22. This outlines additional responsibilities for golf cart operators while giving towns and cities the ability to add restrictions.

The state law currently states:

  • Drivers must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid driver’s license
  • Golf carts must be registered with the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) and carry liability insurance
  • Registration decals must be visible on the windshield
  • All occupants under 12 must wear a seat belt
  • Golf carts may only be driven on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less and within four miles of their registered address (or if in a gated community, within four miles of the entrance)

The public workshop will discuss the following topics:

  • Whether golf carts should be allowed to operate after dark, which under state law requires working headlights and taillights
  • Additional restrictions on where and when carts may be driven, including whether to limit use on high-traffic areas such as four-lane roads or traffic circles

Bluffton residents, businesses and golf cart owners are encouraged to attend and share their perspectives.
