Student caught with firearm on Battery Creek High's campus

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. () — A 16-year-old student was detained after he brought a gun on Battery Creek High School’s campus Wednesday, officials announced.

There were no direct threats made to students or staff, a school spokesperson said. According to an email sent to parents, any student found to have a weapon on campus will face “severe consequences, including criminal charges.”

The 16-year-old was detained by the School Resource Officer (SRO) before being transported to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (SCDJJ), a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said.

“Possessing a weapon on school ground is a serious offense that results in disciplinary and legal action,” a school spokesperson said in an email to parents. Weapons are prohibited on all Beaufort County School District campuses.

There will be an increased law enforcement presences and extra support staff on campus this week.

The spokesperson said that if anyone ever become aware of a potential threat to immediately report it to law enforcement or school administration.

“We urge parents, guardians, and caregivers to have conversations with their children about the seriousness of incidents like this and the importance of immediately reporting any knowledge of weapons on school grounds to school staff,” a BCSO spokesperson said.
