A charming Minnesota suburb just outside Minneapolis has been dubbed America’s best small city.

Plymouth, situated in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, has been deemed the most livable small city in the US, according to a study by SmartAsset.

The financial technology company used seven metrics to evaluate 279 cities with population sizes between 65,000 and 100,000 across America.

The evaluation factors included housing affordability, poverty and unemployment rates, health insurance coverage, healthcare access, entertainment, and commute times.

Located 12 miles northwest of Minneapolis, Plymouth was found to have the ideal mix of convenience and serenity.

It offers residents the resources of a big city without the chaos that generally comes with it, the study found.

The city, home to 77,638 residents and known for its beautiful parks and top-rated school districts, boasts an unemployment rate of just 2.09 percent, SmartAsset reported.

The national unemployment rate as of July was 4.2 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Data shows that Plymouth is also a well-insured city, with 98.7 of residents having health insurance coverage.

Its housing market is among the most affordable on SmartAsset’s list, with just 17.5 percent of residents’ $130,793 median monthly household income going toward monthly payments.

The median monthly housing cost of residents is $1,909.

The city’s poverty rate sits at relatively low 5.1 percent.

The most recent Census Bureau data reports that the national poverty rate is 11.1 percent.

Statistics aside, the Plymouth boasts about its ‘thriving community’ and its residents’ ‘excellent quality of life’ on its website

‘Its lakes and rolling terrain provide the backdrop for a blend of well-planned residential, business and commercial-industrial areas,’ the city wrote.

Plymouth’s commercial-industrial base offers 54,000 jobs and has Minnesota’s fourth-largest economy, according to the city.

SmartAssets reported the city is home to 40,486 businesses and that people’s average commute is just 20 minutes.

Plymouth has about half a dozen ‘sizable’ bodies of water, according to the city. It is home to Medicine Lake, the second-largest lake in Hennepin County, attracting boaters and outdoor lovers from across the state.

And while technically small, Plymouth is Minnesota’s seventh-largest city, and officials say the population is on the rise.

Also rounding out SmartAssets’ top-five ranking were the Midwest cities of Bloomington, Illinois; Livonia, Michigan; O’Fallon, Missouri; and Ankeny, Iowa.

Bloomington, which landed in second place, has a population of 78,591 people and housing costs that account for just 18.16 percent of the median monthly household income of $77,577.

Livonia and O’Fallon came in third and fourth place, respectively, with Ankeny taking the final slot in the top five.
