Just more than a third of U.S. adults support President Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos survey.

In the survey, conducted last weekend, 38 percent of respondents said the National Guard should be deployed to Washington, while 46 percent said they should not be in the nation’s capital, and 16 percent didn’t know.

There was a sharp divide in support by party, however.

The latest survey shows Republicans were largely supportive of the troop deployment, with 76 percent saying the Guard members should be deployed in the District and only 12 percent saying they should not be. Thirteen percent said they didn’t know.

Democrats were broadly opposed to Trump’s move, with 80 percent saying the National Guard should not be in Washington and 8 percent saying they should be deployed. Twelve percent said they didn’t know.

Among those who don’t affiliate with either party, 52 percent opposed the National Guard deployment, 28 percent supported it, and 21 percent didn’t know.

Trump deployed hundreds of Guard members in the District earlier this month and federalized the local police department as part of a federal takeover aimed at cracking down on crime.

Over the weekend, the number of Guard troops surpassed 2,200, including nearly 1,000 members of the District’s National Guard. Multiple GOP-led states including Mississippi, Ohio and West Virginia have also sent personnel.

The latest survey shows similar levels of support for the federal government taking control of D.C.’s local police force, with support from 36 percent of adults overall, including 71 percent of Republicans and 8 percent of Democrats.

The survey included 1,022 U.S. adults and was conducted Aug. 22-24. The margin of error is 3 percentage points overall and ranges from 5 points to 6 points for individual groups.
