Conditions are expected to gradually ease from the west during the evening, although may continue into the late evening over the state’s Lower South East.

Communities which may be affected include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Renmark, Mount Gambier and Ceduna.

A gale warning was issued by the bureau today for a huge stretch of coastal waters, including the Adelaide metropolitan area.

Residents in large parts of Victoria, NSW, the ACT and Tasmania are also being warned of powerful damaging winds through today and into the weekend as a strong cold front takes hold.

The bureau says a strengthening north-westerly airstream will bring gusts of up to 100km/h to elevated areas.

Heavy snowfalls and blizzard conditions are forecast for alpine areas, including parts of the NSW Snowy Mountains district above 1400 metres and Victoria’s Eastern Ranges above 1200 metres.

For the capital cities, Adelaide is heading for a maximum temperature of 13 degrees, Melbourne 14 degrees and Sydney 21 degrees.

But forecasters warn the wind chill will make it feel much cooler in many parts.
