The Glynn County Police Department said the man shot at officers who were doing a welfare check on “an alleged victim of domestic violence.”

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — A man in Glynn County has been arrested after police say he shot at officers several times at a motel in Brunswick early Saturday morning, prompting a standoff.

Shortly after midnight, the Glynn County Police Department said patrol officers responded to Motel 6 located at 3040 Scarlett St. to do a welfare check on “an alleged victim of domestic violence.”

While checking on the victim, GCPD said the man, identified as 58-year-old David Kevin Griffis, fired several shots at officers using a handgun.

GCPD said three officers returned fire, as Griffis retreated into a motel room where he locked himself inside.

“Fortunately, none of the officers from GCPD were injured in the exchange,” GCPD said in a Facebook post.

Officers then established a perimeter around the motel room Griffis was in, while “crisis negotiators” attempted to persuade him to surrender, GCPD. However, the police department said he refused to exit the room.

“The GCPD SWAT team was then deployed and swiftly apprehended Griffis after deploying canisters of CS/OC gas in the room,” GCPD’s Facebook post states. “Griffis was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment of gas inhalation. Griffis did not sustain any gunshot wounds.”

According to GCPD, Chief Scott Ebner contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and requested their assistance to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

“As a result, GBI Agents responded to the scene and are conducting an investigation surrounding the officer-involved shooting,” GCPD said. “GCPD Criminal Investigation detectives are investigating the aggravated assault on the officers. Additionally, the GCPD Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will be performing a subsequent administrative investigation into the GCPD policies related to officer-involved shootings.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call GCPD’s non-emergency at 912-554-3645. To provide information anonymously, call the Silent Witness Crime Tip Line at 912-264-1333.
