Arch Manning throws interception as Texas opener turns nightmarish

It’s not getting better for Arch Manning.

During their first game against Ohio State, the Texas quarterback was stopped at the goal line on a Tush Push attempt, ending the Longhorns’ most promising drive midway through the third quarter while they were down 7-0.

That 70-yard drive, notably, included just three throws from Manning, none of which went over nine yards.

Coach Steve Sarkisian seems to have opted for a cautious approach with his junior quarterback, who faced significant challenges in the first half of the game.

On the next drive with Manning trying a deeper throw, he was picked off by the Buckeyes’ Jermaine Mathews Jr. with Texas on its own 48-yard line.

Manning struggled with his accuracy and had less than 40 passing yards heading into the fourth quarter.

Arch, the nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning, has been a much-discussed prospect since his high school days, but this is his initial true experience as the designated starting quarterback for Texas.

His offense did not score entering the fourth quarter — albeit against a terrific Ohio State defense — and he has looked overwhelmed by the moment.

Ohio State turned the interception into a touchdown to take a 14-0 lead with 13:08 remaining in the game, putting Manning in a tough spot considering his struggles on the day.

Manning nearly threw an interception on the following drive, but the review overturned the turnover that may have sealed an Ohio State victory.
