Daylight saving time is on the 2nd earliest date possible in 2025

(NEXSTAR) – Enjoy the late sunsets while they last. The end of daylight saving time – and the earlier sunsets that come with it – is coming sooner this year.

The clocks will fall back on Nov. 2, 2025, the second earliest date possible. Most of us will be asleep at 2 a.m. when the change takes place, but will notice the next day when the sun sets an hour earlier than the day before.

The annual change is welcomed by some but dreaded by many who say the darker nights contribute to seasonal depression in the winter. On the other hand, proponents of the fall time change say the brighter mornings are “undeniably” better for our health. Plus, they say it’s safer for kids getting to school in the morning. A switch to permanent daylight saving time would mean a dark trip to the school bus stop.

Daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday of November, so the date varies from year to year. Next year we’ll see the earliest possible start to darker nights when daylight saving starts on Nov. 1, 2026.

That is unless legislators move to change the annual resetting of the clocks. Efforts to move the country to “lock the clocks” and move to permanent daylight saving time have repeatedly come up in Congress but have stalled out so far.

Two states have already made the change to permanent daylight saving time: Hawaii and Arizona (with the exception of Navajo land).
