Robin Wright admits ‘huge regret’ about co-parenting with ex Sean Penn: ‘We were both extremes’

Robin Wright is acknowledging her parenting mistakes with her two children, whom she shares with her ex-husband Sean Penn.

The actress, 59, said she “wasn’t hard enough” on daughter Dylan, 34, and son Hopper, 32, while they were growing up.

“I have a huge regret as a mother and have experienced the fallout of this regret for many years with my kids — I wasn’t hard enough on them,” she told the Times of London in an interview published Saturday.

Hopper revealed his battle with crystal meth addiction in 2017. Wright told the outlet Dylan was also rebellious growing up,

“Every day if the phone rings you’re like, ‘Is he alive? Is she alive?’” Wright recalled. “I went through that for so many years with both of them.”

The “Princess Bride” actress said that Penn, 65, was much tougher on their kids but he wasn’t as present due to his acting career.

“But he was gone so much of the time,” she said. “He’d come back and be the policeman and then he’d leave me with the residue.”

“Then I would soften the blow,” she continued. “We were both extremes. They didn’t get that grey area in the middle, which is stern, and that is what they needed.”

But Wright said that both Dylan and Hopper are now “in a really good place.”

Wright and Penn were married for 14 years from 1996 to 2010. Both she and Penn have been married and divorced three times.

She was also in a years-long on-and-off relationship with actor Ben Foster, who’s 14 years her junior. The two broke off their engagement for a second time in 2020.

Wright is now dating architect Henry Smith, whom she met in the UK.

“He is a sweetheart and just a good, decent adult. He’s a man,” she told the Times of London.

Wright and Penn appear to be on good terms after their divorce.

Back in 2023, Wright said she and Penn were friends after being estranged, telling E! News that being divorced while having kids is “one of the most difficult things in life.”

“We’re always gonna be a family, whether we’re together or apart, you know, and I think that’s beautiful and I wish that for everybody,” she said.
